Yesterday in Sunday school my mom was reading several verses out of Matthew chapter 14, and when she got to verse 15, God pricked my heart and I knew what to write about today.
Jesus had heard that John the Baptist was killed, He went on a boat to a desert place, and a multitude followed Him. After He had ministered unto them, they were hungry but there was not enough food for so many. Verse 15,”And when it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, This is a DESERT place, and the time is NOW past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.” Jesus had come to a desert place after hearing dear John had been killed. I’m sure this was hard on Him, not because He didn’t know it was going to happen, but you see, Jesus had great compassion, so He was sorry for John, He knew John was with His Father, but I suspect He felt the fear and agony that John must have been feeling before his death. Just because He is God, does not mean He doesn’t have feelings, it didn’t mean that He did not get weary, it didn’t mean that He was not saddened.
So here He is, in a desert place. A dry place, I would suspect and yet once again, He is giving Himself to the people. He told His disciples, “They need not depart; give ye them to eat,” out of His “dry place,” He was able to bless the five thousand. I don’t see Him saying, Don’t you understand, I’ve lost a dear friend, I just want to be alone. I don’t see Him giving into the sadness, but I see Him overcoming the need! When you are in your “dry place,” and you feel that nobody cares, or you feel that you can’t make it, remember Jesus is there with you, He is in the desert WITH you, and if you will allow Him, He will overcome the need for you!
The people gladly took the food that Jesus blessed because they were hungry. The disciples thought it was past time for them, but Jesus’s timing is always perfect! He fed them in a dry place, during a dry time, and He will feed you too! His food will sustain you, give you strength, give you rest, and renew you. Jesus did not allow the circumstances nor the place, to determine His actions. He overcame and you can too, when Jesus is with you!
